Artist's Description
This is one of a series of photographs inspired by the 1991 film, La Belle Noiseuse directed by Jacques Rivette. The model does not resemble the actress Emmanuelle Bart who plays Marianne, nor was she supposed to. But this series of photos was created as an homage to the poses in the film as well as the work by artist Bernard Dufour whose work appears in the film.
This film had a big impact on me as a youngster and later as an artist. I even remember seeing a review of the film by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert when I was 14 years old. They both loved it. It quickly became one of my favorites.
This series features Nika as the model. This was from our second photo shoot together. She is one of my favorite models.

Growing up in Indiana, the Southwest seemed as foreign as Mars. I remember my first trip out West, entering Utah from Wyoming on Interstate 80. The landscape seemed magical and I wanted to photograph it. I was a bit of a darkroom geek in high school but only took one...
