Description
The Miracle of St. George the Dragon Slayer was created as a free project in my Drawing 6 class at Ball State University in 200. I wanted to create a companion to my drawing, Twilight in Sin City, created the previous semester. With this piece I explored imagery and themes related to the myth of St. George and his vanquished dragon. The story was a popular one in illustrating the triumph of Christianity over paganism in the minds of converts. The story was very popular in Russia and continues to be a favored Russian Orthodox icon. My version is more of a conceptual icon. The images swirl and mesh to create a complex psychedelic mass to contemplate and decipher. This was my first and most successful attempt to create a contemporary, religious themed work of art. Unfortunately the other drawings, now lost, were not nearly as successful.
The imagery came from my personal photographs, pages from tattoo magazines, comic books, and a few appropriations from artists whose work I love. The tumbling composition was inspired by the works of James Rosenquist and Lari Pittman. They were two artists whose works were and continue to be a source of inspiration.
The bottom panel is a full size sheet of illustration board. The top panel is about one third that size. The entire piece was rendered with colored pencils aside for a very small area where I used spray paint. The original piece hangs in my studio. The black borders are intentional.
